The Government of Canada’s announced today an investment of more than $2.1 million as part of the year one funding through Canada’s Economic Action Plan to improve housing conditions for the First Nation communities on Vancouver Island.

James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo – Alberni, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), made the announcement along with members of the Tseshaht First Nation community.

“Our Government’s Economic Action Plan is creating jobs, stimulating the local economy and improving housing conditions for First Nation communities in British Columbia,” said MP Lunney.

Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada has committed $400 million over two years to help First Nation communities build needed new housing, repair and remediate existing non-profit housing for their members, and complement housing programs offered by CMHC. This investment will also provide an economic stimulus for many First Nations and surrounding areas by creating jobs.

Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, some $50 million in federal investments will be made available to First Nations in British Columbia to address immediate housing needs.

Specifically, CMHC will allocate more than $11.1 million to retrofit housing units on reserve in British Columbia. Of this funding, 17 First Nation communities on Vancouver Island will receive more than $2.1 million to improve the quality of 207 housing units.

HAWKESBURY, ON, February 10, 2010 — The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, the United Counties of Prescott and Russell and the Town of Hawkesbury today celebrated the start of construction of 24 affordable rental units. The project is supported by $2.88 million in funding through the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program.

Pierre Lemieux, Member of Parliament for Glengarry – Prescott – Russell, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Jean-Marc Lalonde, Member of Provincial Parliament for Glengarry – Prescott – Russell on behalf of Jim Bradley, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; along with Conrad Lamadeleine, Warden of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, Jeanne Charlebois, Mayor of the Town of Hawkesbury, made the announcement.

“Our government is providing a hand up to those Canadians who need it the most,” said MP Pierre Lemieux. “We’re committed to making communities stronger through projects like this one here in Hawkesbury. These investments in local infrastructure will help create new jobs stimulate the local economy.”

“The province is committed to helping people who live on lower or fixed incomes stay in their home communities,” said MPP Jean-Marc Lalonde. “These 24 new affordable rental units are going to make a positive difference in the lives of the individuals living here, and make an excellent addition to the Town of Hawkesbury.”

The 24-unit project located at 300 Nelson Street received $2.88 million in funding through the two-year extension of the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program and is sponsored by the Brisson/Labelle Partnership. The building will be occupied by individuals living on low incomes, including persons with disabilities and special needs.

“It is living proof that with partnerships between various levels of governments and the private sector, we can achieve important projects like this one and this participation will allow our community to enjoy more affordable housing,” said Warden Conrad Lamadeleine.

“We welcome this new housing development in our town and we congratulate Mr. Marc-André Labelle, Mr. Dominic Labelle and Mr. Jean-Luc Brisson for the opportunity they are offering our residents seeking affordable housing” said Mayor Jeanne Charlebois.

The Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for up to 20,000 households in Ontario.

In 2008, the Government of Canada committed more than $1.9 billion over the next five years to improve and build new affordable housing and to help the homeless. Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on this with an additional one-time investment of more than $2 billion over two years in new and existing social housing and lending of up to another $2 billion to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure. Combined for Ontario, this means a further $1.2-billion joint investment under the amended Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement. The federal and provincial governments are contributing equally to this overall investment.

Ontario is moving quickly to get new housing built. The province has already approved more than $224 million for construction-ready projects, which will improve access to affordable housing for low-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities across the province. It will also create jobs and strengthen local economies. To find out more about affordable housing in Ontario, visit www.mah.gov.on.ca.

Funding of $2.4 million for 20 new affordable housing rental units for seniors living on low income was announced today in Belleville.

Daryl Kramp, Member of Parliament for Prince Edward – Hastings, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and the Honourable Leona Dombrowsky, Member of Provincial Parliament for Prince Edward – Hastings and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; along with Lloyd Churchill, Mayor of Bancroft and Chair of the Hastings/Quinte Social Services Committee on behalf of Warden of Hastings County, Ron Emond and Councillor Garnet Thompson on behalf of Neil Ellis, Mayor of Belleville, made the announcement.

“The Government of Canada is helping Canadians during these tough economic times and giving hope to seniors who need quality, affordable housing that meets their needs,” said MP Kramp. “This investment is possible through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government’s plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession. For Ontario, this includes a $1.2 billion joint investment.”

“New housing initiatives add significant support to the McGuinty government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy,” said MPP Dombrowsky. “We will continue to work with our municipal partners to ensure more units are built during the life of this program.”

“The support of both the federal and provincial governments is crucial to our collective attempts to find housing that is affordable for those in search of an adequate, affordable home,” said Warden Emond. “With over 1300 households still on our affordable housing wait list the challenge is great but with today’s announcement we are making a real difference here in the City of Belleville.”

“This joint funding towards affordable housing for seniors in Belleville is wonderful news and will be welcomed by those individuals currently on the waiting list for affordable housing in our community,” said Mayor Ellis. “It is another great example of what can be accomplished when all levels of government work together for the betterment of all citizens.”

The Government of Canada wants to ensure that Canadians on fixed incomes can live with independence and dignity and remain in their communities, close to family and friends. Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides $400 million, over two years, to build new rental housing for low-income seniors. Overall, the Economic Action Plan includes $2 billion for new and existing social housing, plus up to $2 billion in loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.

Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on the Government of Canada’s commitment in 2008 of more than $1.9 billion, over the next five years, to improve and build new affordable housing and help the homeless.

Today’s announcement celebrates the funding for 20 new affordable rental units for seniors at 185 Cannifton Road, in Belleville. The project is sponsored by the Corporation of the County of Hastings.

The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and the City of Windsor celebrated the funding for 15 new affordable rental units. This project is supported by $1.8 million in funding through the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program.

Jeff Watson, Member of Parliament for Essex, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation; the Honourable Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Economic Development and Trade and Member of Provincial Parliament for Windsor West on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; and City of Windsor Councillor Dave Brister, attended the ceremony.

“This is great news for people with disabilities in Windsor,” said MP Watson. “These new rental units will provide more options for those in need of suitable, affordable housing, and are important to the economic and social well-being of the community.”

“Access to affordable housing is a key component of the McGuinty government’s poverty reduction strategy,” said MPP Sandra Pupatello. “We are committed to working with our federal and municipal partners to ensure new affordable housing units are built in our community, where they are needed.”

The 15-unit project, sponsored by Windsor Residence Inc., will be occupied by persons with disabilities.

“We are very excited about the new Windsor Residence II project” said Mayor Eddie Francis. “This project will provide much needed barrier free housing with support services for persons with physical and developmental challenges. We look forward to the completion of this new project to assist those in need of supportive housing in our community for many years to come.”

The Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for up to 20,000 households in Ontario.

The Government of Canada announced today that the County of Oxford has been approved for seven infrastructure loans as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

The announcement was made by Dave Mackenzie, Member of Parliament for Oxford, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

The County of Oxford has been approved for more than $12 million in low-cost loans from CMHC’s Municipal Infrastructure Lending Program (MILP):

The Town of Ingersoll will see $1.7 million put to work for the reconstruction of Clark Road East and Wonham Streets,

The Township of East Zorra – Tavistock will see an investment of $3 million for wastewater servicing in Innerkip,

The Township of Blandford – Blenheim will benefit from $3.17 million for upgrades to the Wastewater Treatment Plant/Sewage Pump station in Platsville,

The City of Woodstock is investing $200,000 to upgrade its Thames Valley Sewage Pump Station, and

The Township of Zorra is investing $4.3 million for the Embro Wastewater Servicing Program.

“Our Government understands the importance of infrastructure in maintaining strong and prosperous communities,” said MP Mackenzie. “This program is opening the door for municipalities of all sizes to meet their housing-related infrastructure needs and create jobs. It’s good news not only for Oxford, but also for Ontario.”

Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides up to $2 billion in direct low-cost loans to municipalities, over two years, for housing-related infrastructure projects through the MILP. Municipal infrastructure loans are available to any municipality in Canada and provide a new source of funds for municipalities to invest in housing-related infrastructure projects. These low cost loans can also be used by municipalities to fund their contribution for cost-shared federal infrastructure programming.

“Oxford County is very happy to partner with all levels of government,” said Oxford County Warden Paul Holbrough. “Residents in Oxford will benefit for many years as a result of the funding being made available for these critical infrastructure projects”.

Eligible projects include infrastructure related to housing services such as water, power generation and waste services, as well as local transportation infrastructure within and into residential areas, such as roads, sidewalks, lighting and green space.

The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and the Region of York celebrated the start of construction of 144 affordable housing units in two projects in the City of Vaughan today. The projects are supported by $10.1 million in funding under the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program. Lois Brown, Member of Parliament for Newmarket – Aurora, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC); Greg Sorbara, Member of Provincial Parliament for Vaughan, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; Region of York Chair, Bill Fisch; Linda Jackson, Mayor of the City of Vaughan; and Kenneth McAlister, President of Hesperus Fellowship Village attended the event. “Vaughan seniors’ will soon have access to more affordable rental housing options,” said MP Brown. “Investments like these are helping low-income seniors to continue to live independently in their communities, close to family and friends.” “Our government knows that access to decent affordable housing is essential to the health and well-being of our communities,” said MPP Sorbara. “The projects we are celebrating today will make a positive and significant difference in the lives of the people who will call them home.” Today’s announcement recognized two affordable housing projects in Vaughan: * Hesperus Village — a 60-unit project, sponsored by Hesperus Fellowship Village received $4.2 million in funding under the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program. The units will be occupied by seniors living on low income. * Mapleglen Residences — an 84-unit project, sponsored by the Regional Municipality of York received $5.9 million in funding under the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program. The units will be occupied by seniors living on low income. The federal and provincial allocations to the projects were complemented by municipal financial incentives. The Regional Municipality of York contributed $1.2 million for Hesperus Village and $14 million for Mapleglen Residences. The City of Vaughan also contributed to these projects by waiving $133,000 in development charges for Hesperus Village and by providing a long-term lease at a nominal fee, for the 2.1 acre lot where Mapleglen Residences will be located. “York Region’s contribution of more than $15 million for these two projects demonstrates our strong commitment to creating safe and affordable accommodation for York Region residents who need it the most,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Bill Fisch. “These projects are also great examples of what can happen when all levels of government and the community successfully work together.” “Hesperus Village is delighted to expand by making an additional sixty affordable rental units possible with multi-level government support,” said Dr. McAlister. “This will be a significant reduction of the length and age of existing waiting lists. Future residents are looking forward to experiencing holistic aging on a natural and intergenerational campus.” The Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement, signed in 2005, comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government.
