The Government of Canada’s announced today an investment of more than $2.1 million as part of the year one funding through Canada’s Economic Action Plan to improve housing conditions for the First Nation communities on Vancouver Island.

James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo – Alberni, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), made the announcement along with members of the Tseshaht First Nation community.

“Our Government’s Economic Action Plan is creating jobs, stimulating the local economy and improving housing conditions for First Nation communities in British Columbia,” said MP Lunney.

Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada has committed $400 million over two years to help First Nation communities build needed new housing, repair and remediate existing non-profit housing for their members, and complement housing programs offered by CMHC. This investment will also provide an economic stimulus for many First Nations and surrounding areas by creating jobs.

Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, some $50 million in federal investments will be made available to First Nations in British Columbia to address immediate housing needs.

Specifically, CMHC will allocate more than $11.1 million to retrofit housing units on reserve in British Columbia. Of this funding, 17 First Nation communities on Vancouver Island will receive more than $2.1 million to improve the quality of 207 housing units.

The Government of Canada and the Province of Saskatchewan today announced $31 million in joint funding for improvements to more than 247 projects in 97 communities in southern locations of Saskatchewan.

The funding was made available through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government’s plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession. Overall, the Economic Action Plan includes $2 billion for new and existing social housing, plus up to $2 billion in loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure. The federal and provincial governments are contributing equally to this overall investment of $132 million under the amended Canada – Saskatchewan Affordable Housing Program Agreement.

The Government of Canada wants to improve the quality of existing social housing for low-income seniors, single parent families, recent immigrants and Aboriginal households. Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides $850 million under the Affordable Housing Initiative to provinces and territories for the renovation and retrofit of existing social housing.

The announcement took place today in Regina at Cornwall Village Housing Co-operative, a 91-unit high rise for low- and moderate-income seniors. A total of $1.8 million is being provided by the Government of Canada and Saskatchewan for elevator, boiler and air handling system replacement and window repairs. The approved work for the 247 projects announced today will be completed through 2010 – 2011.

Andrew Scheer, Member of Parliament for Regina – Qu’Appelle, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC); and First Nations and Métis Relations Minister Bill Hutchinson on behalf of Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Donna Harpauer, made the announcement today.

“Through Year 2 of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our Government remains committed to giving a hand-up to those who need it most here in Saskatchewan,” said MP Scheer. “Projects like these are especially valuable during these tough economic times, because they put construction workers and tradespeople to work quickly while also providing needed improvements to housing throughout the country.”

“Our government is committed to improving housing availability and affordability in Saskatchewan,” Minister Hutchinson said. “This investment will ensure that safe, affordable, and well-maintained housing will be available to people who need assistance. It’s more important than ever to work together to develop housing solutions that will benefit Saskatchewan citizens and revitalize communities. Cornwall Village, and other renovation projects like it, is an example of that.”

Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on the Government of Canada’s commitment in 2008 of more than $1.9 billion, over the next five years, to improve and build new affordable housing and help the homeless.

The amendment to the Canada – Saskatchewan Affordable Housing Program Agreement, which included funding under Canada’s Economic Action Plan, signed in May 2009, brought federal housing support of $74 million to the province. The Government of Saskatchewan will match that commitment for a total of $148 million to assist those in housing need and, in collaboration with other levels of government and community partners, to make various types of affordable housing programs possible. In Saskatchewan, federal-provincial housing programs are delivered through the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation.

HAWKESBURY, ON, February 10, 2010 — The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, the United Counties of Prescott and Russell and the Town of Hawkesbury today celebrated the start of construction of 24 affordable rental units. The project is supported by $2.88 million in funding through the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program.

Pierre Lemieux, Member of Parliament for Glengarry – Prescott – Russell, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and Jean-Marc Lalonde, Member of Provincial Parliament for Glengarry – Prescott – Russell on behalf of Jim Bradley, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; along with Conrad Lamadeleine, Warden of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, Jeanne Charlebois, Mayor of the Town of Hawkesbury, made the announcement.

“Our government is providing a hand up to those Canadians who need it the most,” said MP Pierre Lemieux. “We’re committed to making communities stronger through projects like this one here in Hawkesbury. These investments in local infrastructure will help create new jobs stimulate the local economy.”

“The province is committed to helping people who live on lower or fixed incomes stay in their home communities,” said MPP Jean-Marc Lalonde. “These 24 new affordable rental units are going to make a positive difference in the lives of the individuals living here, and make an excellent addition to the Town of Hawkesbury.”

The 24-unit project located at 300 Nelson Street received $2.88 million in funding through the two-year extension of the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program and is sponsored by the Brisson/Labelle Partnership. The building will be occupied by individuals living on low incomes, including persons with disabilities and special needs.

“It is living proof that with partnerships between various levels of governments and the private sector, we can achieve important projects like this one and this participation will allow our community to enjoy more affordable housing,” said Warden Conrad Lamadeleine.

“We welcome this new housing development in our town and we congratulate Mr. Marc-André Labelle, Mr. Dominic Labelle and Mr. Jean-Luc Brisson for the opportunity they are offering our residents seeking affordable housing” said Mayor Jeanne Charlebois.

The Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for up to 20,000 households in Ontario.

In 2008, the Government of Canada committed more than $1.9 billion over the next five years to improve and build new affordable housing and to help the homeless. Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on this with an additional one-time investment of more than $2 billion over two years in new and existing social housing and lending of up to another $2 billion to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure. Combined for Ontario, this means a further $1.2-billion joint investment under the amended Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement. The federal and provincial governments are contributing equally to this overall investment.

Ontario is moving quickly to get new housing built. The province has already approved more than $224 million for construction-ready projects, which will improve access to affordable housing for low-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities across the province. It will also create jobs and strengthen local economies. To find out more about affordable housing in Ontario, visit www.mah.gov.on.ca.

Funding of $9.2 million for 77 new affordable housing rental units for seniors, persons with disabilities, and low income households was announced today in Orillia.

Bruce Stanton, Member of Parliament for Simcoe North, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and the Honourable Aileen Carroll, Ontario Minister of Culture, Minister Responsible for Seniors and Member of Provincial Parliament for Barrie, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; along with Cal Patterson, Warden of Simcoe County, and Ron Stevens, Mayor of the City of Orillia, made the announcement.

“The Government of Canada is helping make affordable housing available in Ontario and across Canada for those who need it most,” said MP Stanton. “Here in Orillia, this initiative will help many people in our community, while creating jobs and stimulating our economy. This investment is possible through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, our government’s plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession. For Ontario, this includes a $1.2 billion joint investment.”

“New housing initiatives add significant support to the McGuinty government’s Poverty Reduction Strategy,” said Minister Carroll. “We will continue to work with our municipal partners to ensure more units are built during the life of this program.”

“The County of Simcoe is committed to providing a wide range of affordable housing options for residents in our 16 member municipalities and the cities of Barrie and Orillia,” stated County Warden Cal Patterson. “These new affordable housing units will support seniors in Orillia, allowing many to remain in their home community as they age. This project is another outstanding example of the great things that happen when we work in partnership with other levels of government and with our community.”

“We are extremely pleased to be awarded another 77 affordable housing units through the federal and provincial governments’ funding opportunities,” added Mayor Stevens. “As of today, non-profit organizations and private developers in the City of Orillia have completed 92 affordable and accessible housing units. With this new 77-unit project at 85 Barrie Road, we will have added a total of 169 units for low income families, seniors and the disabled since 2006.”

The Government of Canada wants to ensure that Canadians on fixed incomes can live with independence and dignity and remain in their communities, close to family and friends. Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides $400 million, over two years, to build new rental housing for low-income seniors. Overall, the Economic Action Plan includes $2 billion for new and existing social housing, plus up to $2 billion in loans to municipalities for housing-related infrastructure.

Canada’s Economic Action Plan builds on the Government of Canada’s commitment in 2008 of more than $1.9 billion, over the next five years, to improve and build new affordable housing and help the homeless.

Today’s announcement celebrates the funding for 77 new affordable rental units at 85 Barrie Road in Orillia. The project is sponsored by developer Moe Zadeh of Serenity Residentials Inc.

Funding of $6.6 million for 132 new affordable housing rental units for seniors living on low income was announced today in Thunder Bay.

The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC); Bill Mauro, Member of Provincial Parliament for Thunder Bay – Atikokan, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; Councillor Joe Virdiramo, Secretary – Treasurer of The District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board (TBDSSAB); City of Thunder Bay Councillor Brian McKinnon; along with Tracy Buckler, President & CEO of St. Joseph’s Care Group made the announcement.

“The Government of Canada is helping Canadians during these tough economic times and giving hope to seniors who need quality, affordable housing that meets their needs,” said Minister Finley. “This investment is possible through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government’s plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession. For Ontario, this includes a $1.2 billion joint investment.”

“Today’s announcement positions Thunder Bay as a community with the full continuum of health care for seniors,” said Bill Mauro, MPP Thunder Bay – Atikokan. “Supportive housing has long been viewed as the missing piece, and today we have addressed that component in a very big way.”

“The TBDSSAB is pleased that the vision of a Centre of Excellence for Integrated Seniors’ Services is one step closer to being realized. Through service integration and partnership, the 132 unit supportive housing project will improve the quality of services to seniors, allowing them to maintain their independence while receiving necessary supports to age in place,” said Joe Virdiramo, Secretary – Treasurer, The District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board.

“Thunder Bay welcomes the Federal and Provincial support for this exciting aspect of the Centre of Excellence for Integrated Seniors’ Services,” said Mayor Lynn Peterson. “Supportive housing allows our seniors to live independently and gain better access to the health care services they need.”

“This 132-unit Supportive Housing building is a vital element to ensure the continuum of care model as envisioned during the Centre of Excellence for Integrated Seniors’ Services (CEISS) project planning. We know that seniors would prefer to live independently in an apartment setting if they are able. This project will permit more seniors to age in place while receiving the assistance they require,” said Tracy Buckler, President & CEO, St. Joseph’s Care Group and Co-Chair of the CEISS Steering Committee.

Today’s announcement celebrates funding for the 132-unit Centre of Excellence for Integrated Seniors’ Services project at 300 Lillie Street North. The project is sponsored by St. Joseph’s Care Group.

Funding of $7.68 million for 64 new affordable housing rental units for seniors and persons with disabilities living on low income was announced today in Sudbury.

The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and the Honourable Rick Bartolucci, Ontario’s Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services and Member of Provincial Parliament for Sudbury, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Ontario’s Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; along with John Rodriguez, Mayor of Greater Sudbury made the announcement.

“The Government of Canada is helping Canadians during these tough economic times and giving hope to seniors and persons with disabilities who need quality, affordable housing that meets their needs,” said Minister Finley. “This investment is possible through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government’s plan to stimulate the economy and create jobs during the global recession. For Ontario, this includes a $1.2 billion joint investment.”

“New housing initiatives like the one announced today add significant support to the Province`s efforts to reduce poverty and are welcomed here in Sudbury,” said Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci. “Ontario will continue to work with its federal and municipal partners to ensure new affordable housing units are built during the life of this program.”

“I am extremely appreciative of the support Greater Sudbury residents are receiving today from the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez. “Finding a home in these new units will lift an enormous burden from the shoulders of someone who lives on a fixed income. We all deserve a safe place to call ‘home’, and I look forward to the day that the keys to these 64 apartments will turn in the locks.”

The Government of Canada wants to ensure that Canadians on fixed incomes can live with independence and dignity and remain in their communities, close to family and friends.
The Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and the City of Windsor celebrated the funding for 15 new affordable rental units. This project is supported by $1.8 million in funding through the Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program.

Jeff Watson, Member of Parliament for Essex, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation; the Honourable Sandra Pupatello, Minister of Economic Development and Trade and Member of Provincial Parliament for Windsor West on behalf of the Honourable Jim Watson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing; and City of Windsor Councillor Dave Brister, attended the ceremony.

“This is great news for people with disabilities in Windsor,” said MP Watson. “These new rental units will provide more options for those in need of suitable, affordable housing, and are important to the economic and social well-being of the community.”

“Access to affordable housing is a key component of the McGuinty government’s poverty reduction strategy,” said MPP Sandra Pupatello. “We are committed to working with our federal and municipal partners to ensure new affordable housing units are built in our community, where they are needed.”

The 15-unit project, sponsored by Windsor Residence Inc., will be occupied by persons with disabilities.

“We are very excited about the new Windsor Residence II project” said Mayor Eddie Francis. “This project will provide much needed barrier free housing with support services for persons with physical and developmental challenges. We look forward to the completion of this new project to assist those in need of supportive housing in our community for many years to come.”

The Canada – Ontario Affordable Housing Program Agreement comprises a commitment of $301 million from each of the two senior levels of government. In total, the federal, provincial and municipal governments will invest at least $734 million in the program, which will provide affordable housing for up to 20,000 households in Ontario.

Last fall, the Government of Canada committed more than $1.9 billion over the next five years to improve and build new affordable housing and to help the homeless.

The Government of Canada announced today that the County of Oxford has been approved for seven infrastructure loans as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

The announcement was made by Dave Mackenzie, Member of Parliament for Oxford, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

The County of Oxford has been approved for more than $12 million in low-cost loans from CMHC’s Municipal Infrastructure Lending Program (MILP):

The Town of Ingersoll will see $1.7 million put to work for the reconstruction of Clark Road East and Wonham Streets,

The Township of East Zorra – Tavistock will see an investment of $3 million for wastewater servicing in Innerkip,

The Township of Blandford – Blenheim will benefit from $3.17 million for upgrades to the Wastewater Treatment Plant/Sewage Pump station in Platsville,

The City of Woodstock is investing $200,000 to upgrade its Thames Valley Sewage Pump Station, and

The Township of Zorra is investing $4.3 million for the Embro Wastewater Servicing Program.

“Our Government understands the importance of infrastructure in maintaining strong and prosperous communities,” said MP Mackenzie. “This program is opening the door for municipalities of all sizes to meet their housing-related infrastructure needs and create jobs. It’s good news not only for Oxford, but also for Ontario.”

Canada’s Economic Action Plan provides up to $2 billion in direct low-cost loans to municipalities, over two years, for housing-related infrastructure projects through the MILP. Municipal infrastructure loans are available to any municipality in Canada and provide a new source of funds for municipalities to invest in housing-related infrastructure projects. These low cost loans can also be used by municipalities to fund their contribution for cost-shared federal infrastructure programming.

“Oxford County is very happy to partner with all levels of government,” said Oxford County Warden Paul Holbrough. “Residents in Oxford will benefit for many years as a result of the funding being made available for these critical infrastructure projects”.

Eligible projects include infrastructure related to housing services such as water, power generation and waste services, as well as local transportation infrastructure within and into residential areas, such as roads, sidewalks, lighting and green space.
